EMR, PCP & ACP Medical Personnel

Total Group provides emergency medical personnel for industrial, commercial, and remote work settings. We help clients assess the worksite and identify the level of medical support that fits the hazards, workforce, location, and operating plan. That may include an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Primary Care Paramedic (PCP), or Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) for on-site standby or emergency medical response, subject to the agreed project scope and applicable requirements.

Medical personnel matched to the worksite

EMR, PCP, and ACP are distinct practitioner designations used in Alberta’s emergency health services framework. The right choice depends on the work being performed, the distance from health care, the site’s emergency plan, and the level of care the client’s risk assessment identifies. Total Group can discuss those planning factors with your team before deployment.

For an industrial or remote project, the conversation should cover:

  • the hazards and credible medical emergencies associated with the work;
  • the number of workers, work shifts, and areas the service must cover;
  • site access, travel distance, weather, communications, and any isolated-work concerns;
  • the location of first-aid resources and how workers will contact medical support; and
  • how an ill or injured worker will be transferred to the nearest appropriate health-care facility under the site plan.

Standby and emergency response planning

On-site medical standby gives project teams a defined point of contact for medical response while work is underway. The service scope should be clear before the shift begins, including the assigned personnel designation, work area, hours, communication method, site access arrangements, and escalation process. These details help the client align the medical service with its broader emergency response plan without assuming that one staffing model fits every project.

Remote and isolated work needs additional attention. Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety guidance recommends assessing the location, hazards, communications, transportation, emergency supplies, and check-in arrangements for lone work. A project may therefore need a practical plan for site access, backup communications, missed check-ins, and coordination with external emergency services.

Alberta requirements and project review

For Alberta workplaces, the Occupational Health and Safety Code addresses first aiders, supplies, equipment, first-aid rooms, emergency communications, and transportation planning. Its requirements vary with the worksite’s hazard category, worker count, and distance classification. The Code also includes provisions for sites where an advanced first aider, ACP, or nurse with an advanced first-aid certificate is required. A client-specific review is needed before selecting personnel or confirming a coverage model.

Alberta’s emergency health services information identifies EMR, PCP and ACP practitioner designations and states that EHS practitioners must be registered with the Alberta College of Paramedics. Confirm the assigned personnel’s registration, authorized role and project requirements before deployment. Other jurisdictions may apply different designation and registration requirements.
