Breathing Air Trailer Rentals

Total Group provides fully equipped Breathing Air Trailer rentals for confined space work, industrial sites and emergency response scenarios. Our inspected, deployment-ready trailers have high-capacity air storage and filtration systems to support a planned breathing-air supply for workers using compatible respiratory equipment.

Projects involving oxygen-deficient or contaminated atmospheres need an air supply matched to the work, the selected respirators and the emergency arrangements. Discuss the expected demand, rental period and site conditions with Total Group so the trailer package can be confirmed before deployment.

How a breathing air trailer fits the work

A breathing air trailer brings an external air source to the worksite. In an air line arrangement, workers receive breathing air through equipment connected to that source. A self-contained breathing apparatus, or SCBA, carries its air supply with the wearer. These arrangements have different mobility and escape considerations. CCOHS explains supplied-air respirators and SCBA and the factors that guide equipment selection.

Air-purifying respirators filter contaminants from the surrounding air; they do not provide an independent oxygen supply. A trailer supplying breathing air also does not ventilate a confined space or make its atmosphere safe for unprotected workers. Atmospheric testing, ventilation, isolation and other controls remain part of the site's hazard-control plan. The Alberta confined-space requirements address testing and ventilation separately from personal protective equipment.

Plan the supply around actual demand

Storage capacity alone does not establish how long a trailer can support a job. The number of simultaneous users, respirator requirements and time on air affect demand. Give the planner the respirator models and intended work pattern, including any demand associated with the rescue arrangements. Confirm compatible connections, operating requirements and the proposed supply duration for the selected package.

For longer rental periods or changing work schedules, agree how remaining supply will be checked and how replenishment or replacement will be arranged. Establish who oversees the air supply, communicates a supply concern and coordinates with the work supervisor. Include loss of supply in the site's emergency planning rather than relying on a general promise of uninterrupted air.

Trailer placement needs usable vehicle access and room for positioning, inspection and servicing. Review the route between the trailer and the work area for traffic, obstructions and potential damage to air lines. Keep the arrangement compatible with entry, exit and rescue access. Confirm these details with the site team before work begins.

Breathing-air quality and equipment requirements

For an Alberta example, section 249 of the OHS Code, Part 18 requires air used in SCBA or air line respiratory protective equipment to meet Table 1 of CSA Z180.1-00 (R2005). It also limits other substances, subject to the exception stated in that section. Sections 244 and 245 place respiratory-hazard assessment and the respiratory equipment code of practice with the employer.

The issuer-listed CSA Z180.1:19 (R2025), Compressed breathing air and systems covers breathing-air purity at the service outlet and systems that produce, store and distribute the air. Its scope also includes system testing, operation and maintenance. The edition named in legislation may differ from a client's specified edition. Confirm the applicable requirements for the project and the air-quality and equipment records needed at handover. Filtration equipment alone does not establish that those requirements have been met.

Coordinate the trailer with rescue readiness

Air trailer rental supports the breathing-air portion of a project. The site must separately establish the rescue arrangements, personnel and equipment appropriate to its hazards. In Alberta, sections 55–57 of the OHS Code address effective rescue, emergency procedures, tending-worker communication and safe entry and exit.

Where conditions are or may become immediately dangerous to life or health, section 251 specifies additional respiratory equipment requirements. For air line equipment, these include an auxiliary air supply sufficient for emergency escape. The site's competent planner must confirm the complete arrangement; the trailer's stored supply does not replace the worker's required escape provision.

Information to send with your rental inquiry

  • Site location, work dates, rental duration and delivery-access constraints.
  • Task description, identified atmospheric hazards and relevant site requirements.
  • Expected simultaneous users, respirator models and anticipated time on air.
  • Proposed trailer position, distance to the work area and access restrictions.
  • Site contacts, rescue arrangements and required handover records.

Confirm which equipment and support are included in the rental, which the site will provide, and who retains inspection and air-quality records. Share these arrangements with the work supervisor and rescue lead. For related project planning, explore Total Group's Rescue services.
